Gen X Is Reshaping Retirement

Turns out, not all roads lead to Florida.

Gen X is Reshaping Retirement: Turns out, not all roads lead to Florida.

The old-school notion that retirement equals golf, beachfront property, and endless leisure is being challenged. While the idea of retiring amongst the palms may sound like a dream, it's not a universal aspiration. Research tells us that Generation X is reshaping the traditional narrative of retirement as a one-way ticket to a poolside chair. Gen X is actively seeking ways to stay engaged, contribute, and remain connected to their world. Gen X feels that although there's nothing inherently wrong with adding more relaxation time to one's life, there doesn't need to be a hard stop proclaiming, "Okay, now I am retired."

Gen X’s Evolving Definition of Retirement:

Retirement no longer signifies the end of one's productive life; instead, it marks a transition to a new chapter filled with possibilities. Research tells us Gen X doesn’t want to retire; they want to transition. This transition may involve pursuing encore careers, volunteering, starting businesses, or dedicating more time to lifelong passions. Their concept of retirement is evolving. It's no longer the finish line but a starting point for new adventures.

According to a recent report from Statistics Canada (2023), the idea of retirement being a one-size-fits-all deal is completely outdated. In fact, it turns out, most Canadian Gen Xers are saying, "We'd rather keep working."

Gen X observed their parents retire (and in some cases their older siblings). They have observed the psychological outcomes of retirement. Psychologist Louis Primavera (The Retirement Maze) dives into the emotional rollercoaster that retirement can be. Spoiler alert - it's not all smooth sailing. While some thrive in their retirement adventures, a significant number find it challenging. Going from a structured work environment to having loads of free time can be disorienting. Stats show, some even turn to antidepressants to cope. Those who do retire successfully create a new schedule and find fresh purpose.

Retirement doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing gig. With people living longer and healthier lives, they're exploring different ways to stay engaged. It's not just about escaping the Monday-to-Friday, nine-to-five grind. It's about finding new ways to use your skills and experience. It's about crafting a retirement journey that's as unique as you are. Retirement has become a dynamic phase where individuals are redefining the rules and creating their path.

Gen X’ers are embracing a dynamic and engaged approach to this life stage. This stage represents an exciting opportunity to redefine personal goals, cultivate new passions, and deepen connections with others. As Gen X continues to challenge conventional retirement norms, they’re discovering this road is diverse, and the destination can be shaped by their unique aspirations and desires. Ultimately, the choice becomes about crafting a ‘retirement’ customized just for them (ok, us 😉).

Peace in your travels,
